Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal at PrudentMD uses advanced laser technology to eliminate unwanted facial or body hair. It’s a noninvasive treatment that reduces or eliminates hair permanently so that you don’t have to worry about plucking, waxing, or shaving. It reduces hair on your:

  • Upper lip
  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Underarms
  • Back
  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Bikini area
  • Arms
  • Legs

Laser hair removal also gets rid of ingrown hairs and razor burn. It produces long-lasting results to give you the smoother, beautiful skin you desire.

Is laser hair removal right for me?

Laser hair removal at PrudentMD is a safe, highly effective treatment. To find out if it’s right for you, aesthetic experts review your medical history and examine the hair on your face or body in the areas you’re concerned about. They discuss your desired results and let you know what to expect before tailoring a treatment that’s best for you. Consultation is free.

How should I prepare for laser hair removal?

It’s important to follow your pretreatment instructions before you undergo laser hair removal at PrudentMD. Protect your skin from the sun, stop taking any medications that may make your skin photosensitive and your provider asks you to, and don’t use sunless tanning creams. Avoid use of foundation, make-up, and deodorant on the day of treatment.

Avoid other hair removal methods for at least four weeks before your scheduled procedure, but shave the treatment area the day before laser hair removal.

What should I expect during laser hair removal?

During laser hair removal, you relax on a treatment table. Your provider gives you protective glasses for your eyes. Numbing cream may be used prior to procedure after the first treatment; however, most do not need it. Dr. Patel prefers not to use numbing cream during the first treatment.

Using a hand-held device, they apply laser energy to targeted areas of your skin. The laser pulses at a fraction of a second, just long enough to heat the hair and damage its follicles and reduce the ability of the treated hair to regrow. Your treatment could last just a few minutes for smaller areas of your upper lip or over an hour for larger treatment areas.

What happens after my treatment?

After laser hair removal, your skin might be red, sometimes itchy or or swollen for a short time. Follow your post-treatment instructions and ice the treated area if you need to. Protect your skin from the sun and avoid tanning beds for the next few weeks.

Over the following days and weeks, you can expect the treated hair to fall out. Several laser treatment sessions and periodic maintenance treatments offer the most effective, long-lasting results.
